How I Fixed a TI-84 Plus CE Stuck on the Validating OS Screen

·3 mins

If your TI-84 Plus CE calculator is stuck in a “Validating OS” loop, keeps restarting, or shows a blinking screen that never gets past the validation process, do not panic. I recently ran into this exact problem, and the solution turned out to be much simpler than I expected.

In my case, the issue was not caused by a corrupted operating system. The real culprit was a swollen battery.

The Problem #

I had not used my TI-84 Plus CE for a couple of weeks. When I finally took it out of the box and tried turning it on, the calculator displayed the following message:

Validating OS… Calculator will restart when validation is complete.

Unfortunately, it never completed the process. The screen kept blinking, and the calculator continuously restarted.

What I Tried #

Before opening the calculator, I attempted several common troubleshooting steps:

  • Turning the calculator off and back on
  • Performing the 2nd + Del reset
  • Pressing the small RESET button on the back of the calculator
  • Trying different startup procedures

None of these methods solved the problem.

Removing the Battery #

The next step was to inspect the battery.

Using a small screwdriver, I removed the two screws securing the back cover and disconnected the battery from the calculator.

Right away, I noticed something unusual: the battery appeared slightly swollen.

How to Check if the Battery Is Swollen #

Here is a quick trick that can help determine whether a battery has started to bulge.

Place the battery on a flat surface and gently spin it with your fingers.

A healthy battery should lie flat and resist spinning. However, a swollen battery often becomes slightly rounded, allowing it to rotate easily like a spinning top.

When I tested the old battery, it spun freely.

I compared it with a brand-new replacement battery, which stayed completely flat on the table and barely moved when I tried to spin it.

If you find a swollen battery, handle it carefully. Do not puncture, bend, or crush it. Remove it from the device if you can do so safely, and recycle or dispose of it according to your local battery disposal rules.

The Fix #

After installing the new battery and reassembling the calculator, I powered it on again.

The TI-84 Plus CE started immediately and booted normally without entering the “Validating OS” loop.

The issue was completely resolved.

Can You Get a Free Replacement Battery? #

Texas Instruments offers battery support for certain calculators that are still under warranty.

If your TI-84 Plus CE is less than two years old, it is worth checking the Texas Instruments battery replacement support page to see whether you qualify for a replacement battery.

Final Thoughts #

If your TI-84 Plus CE is stuck on the “Validating OS” screen, do not assume that the operating system itself is damaged.

While software recovery methods may help in some situations, a failing battery can cause very similar symptoms. Inspecting the battery only takes a few minutes and could save you a lot of frustration.

In my case, replacing the swollen battery completely solved the problem.
