Toyota RAV4 Heat Shield Rattle: Quick and Easy DIY Fix
I started hearing a loud metallic rattling sound while driving my Toyota RAV4. It seemed to be coming from underneath the vehicle. When I looked under the car, the problem was near the exhaust: a heat shield mounting hole had worn too large, so the shield was loose and vibrating.
This post shows the quick, inexpensive fix I used — a large washer, a 10 mm socket, and a little anti-seize.

This repair is shown on a 2018 Toyota RAV4. The same method may work on other RAV4 years and on Toyota or Lexus vehicles with a similar heat-shield mount. Check the mounting point under your vehicle before buying a washer, because the size and design can vary.
Always let the exhaust cool completely before working underneath the vehicle, and support the vehicle safely if it needs to be raised.
Tools and Materials #
The washer needs to be wider than the damaged hole in the heat shield. A local hardware store such as Home Depot or Lowe’s is a good place to find one if you want to match the size in person.
Finding the Loose Heat Shield #
After hearing the rattle from underneath, I looked near the exhaust system. There is a metal heat shield between the exhaust and the body of the vehicle. One of the mounting points was damaged.
The mounting stud and nut were still there, but the hole in the heat shield had become too large. That extra play let the shield vibrate and make the metallic rattling sound.
Removing the Rusty Mounting Nut #
The first step is to remove the nut from the mounting stud. The nut was a little rusty, so I sprayed it with WD-40 and let it soak for a couple of minutes.
Then I used a ratchet with a 10 mm socket to remove the nut.
Choosing a Washer That Covers the Hole #
I picked up a washer wide enough to span the damaged hole in the heat shield. That extra diameter is what keeps the shield from slipping over the nut again.
Installing the Washer and Nut #
Before putting everything back together, I applied a small amount of anti-seize lubricant to the mounting stud. That should make the nut easier to remove if this needs attention again later.
Then I slid the washer onto the stud, reinstalled the nut, and tightened it securely.
Results #
That was the whole repair. There was no more rattling noise under the car. It was a quick and easy fix, and the ride is quiet again.
